To the entire Harper family, I want to express my sincere condolences for your loss. Hugh has been missed by our department, and myself since he became ill more than a year ago. He fought the battle with ALS the same way that he did while at work here, quietly, and with dignity. I don’t need to tell you that his demeanor was such that his hair had to be on fire to get him to say “Boo”, but once in awhile, he’d chirp up and zing one from left field that would have everyone doing a double-take. You can just imagine him sitting there at the break room table, coffee cup in hand. One ankle crossed over the other, leaning back, taking in all the buzz going on in the room. Then, without so much as averting his eyes from the TV, or newspaper that he was reading, he’d send it. Though it might be a terribly funny line, half of the hysteria was that it emanated from Hugh. After about a minute, he’d get that smirk on his face, perhaps chuckle a little. But I always had the sneaking suspicion that he’d been saving that particular line for the perfect moment. And was thoroughly pleased with himself that it went over as well as it did. He had the patience of a Saint. The timing of the best stand-up comics around. And the best camouflage in his “Aw shucks, I’m just simple backwoods farm boy…”.
I’ll miss our verbal and written jousting. I’ll miss his endless patience around the workplace, where everything got done without any hyperbole. No fan fare. No fuss. Most of all I miss not knowing him outside the workplace. I wish I had gone to school, and grew up around him. He would have been a great friend I’m sure. So count your blessings. Though you may not feel fortunate at this particular point in time, know that you were able to spend time and share things with someone I could only wish for. Take those memories and experiences to heart. I’m sure from Hugh was always observing, teaching, and guiding in his unique way for the same reason he put up with me around here. To make me a better Human. A better Christian. A better man. And for that, I thank him. And will always remember him.
Sincerely,
Tom Plaska

My thoughts and prayers to all of you. The Hugh I knew, and for such a brief period of time did I get the pleasure to know him, was a gentle and approachable human being. A man willing to offer help (I had plumbing questions and frustrations, Hugh was my go to guy), a man of courage, and a man in love with his family. He will be missed.
