
Smith Sr., Phillip James
Phillip James Smith Sr., age 68 of White Cloud and formerly of Newaygo and Grand Rapids, passed away Monday, October 15, 2007 at his home following a long illness. Phil was born on June 21, 1939 in Grand Rapids to Thomas and Hilda Smith and later moved to the Emerald Lake area and eventually to White Cloud 9 years ago. Phil had worked for Smith Brothers Furniture Company, Heckman Contracting and Davidson Plyform until his retirement. He was an active member of the White Cloud United Methodist Church where he made various wood projects for the church. Phil was a master woodworker and enjoyed wood carving, fishing, hunting and camping and most recently was knitting hats. Enjoyed spending time in the Michigan outdoors and gardening at his home. Phil also served in the United States Navy.
He is survived by his sons, Phillip James (Elaine) Smith Jr. of Wayland; Jeffrey Stephen (Jill) Smith of White Cloud; Paul Thomas (Angela) Smith of Hudsonville; Jonathon Gene (Kris) Smith of Byron Center; 12 grandchildren; 4 step children and several step grandchildren; his sisters, Dorothy (Bob) Dykstra of Grand Rapids; Toots Koppenhall of Grand Rapids; his brothers, Tom (Theresa) Smith of Grand Rapids; Al Smith.
VISITATION : Wednesday from 2-4 & 6-8pm at Crandell Funeral Home – White Cloud Chapel. FUNERAL SERVICES : Thursday at 2pm at the White Cloud United Methodist Church. INTERMENT : Big Prairie Everett Township Cemetery. MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTIONS : White Cloud United Methodist Church.
