
Stratton, Maria Giovanna (Filippis)
Maria Giovanna (Filippis) Stratton, age 90 of Lakeview, formerly of Fremont, a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully on February 16, 2008 in Lakeview, Michigan. Maria was born on December 2, 1917 in Conflenti, Italy to Nicola and Caterina (Paolo) Filippis and came to the United States as a teenager from Italy where she made her home in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. She met and later married Edward Stratton on December 6, 1941 in Sault Ste. Marie and Ed preceded her in death after 54 years of marriage. After Ed’s duty of service to the United States Army, Marie and Ed moved to Fremont where they raised their family. Marie’s passion in life revolved around her family and her wonderful network of friends. She was a member of the All Saints Catholic Church in Fremont and had been a member of the All Saints Catholic Church Altar Society. Marie enjoyed knitting, embroidery, playing cards, visiting with friends on the telephone and shopping.
She is survived by her two daughters, Diana (Gordon) Humm of Lakeview, Michigan; Judy (Jerry) Nadeau-Zerr of Wenatchee, Washington; her grandchildren, Lisa (Joseph) Plowman; Krista (Jerrod) Klein; Laura (Robert) Giovanini; Nicola Nadeau; Noel Nadeau; step grandchild, Deonna (Kenton) Richardson; great grandchildren, Justin Klein; Carson Klein; Joseph Plowman; Jessica Plowman; Trey Giovanini; Michael Giovanini; Kaleb Richardson; half sisters, Grace Kester; Margaret Bernard; half sister-in-law, Sophie (Jim) Becklin; step brother, Sal (Chris) Graziani; many, many nieces, nephews in the United States, Canada and Australia.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents, Caterina Filippis, Jennie (Graziani) Filippis, Nicola and Angeline Filippis; her husband, Ed; her son-in-law, Joseph Paul; her brother and sister-in-law, Antonio and Mary Filippis; her sister and brother-in-law, Caterina (Filippis) and Vincenzo Roperti; step sister and step brother-in-law, Dante and Pauline Maggatti; step sister and step brother-in-law, Rose and Stanley Proffitt; brothers-in-law, Fred Kester and John Bernard.
VISITATION : Monday 4-6:30pm at Crandell Funeral Home – Fremont Chapel. ROSARY SERVICES : Monday at 6:30pm at the funeral home. FUNERAL MASS SERVICES : Tuesday at 11am at the All Saints Catholic Church in Fremont. INTERMENT : Maple Grove Cemetery. MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTIONS : Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or the American Kidney Foundation. Dear Laura, Bobby, Try, Michael, Mr. & Mrs. Humm and entire family-
Grandma Stratton was such a gift to this world. She forever has touched our lives personally. Her ZEST for life and love for her family were so admired. I had the privilege of knowing both of your parents for a very long time. (that's cause I'm old!)
Marie was a very special person and was loved greatly by all that knew her. Kindness (and neatness) were her middle name.
You will miss her - but she is with your Dad now. Cherish all the great memories.
